General Information:
The Department of Psychology in the College of Health and Behavioral Studies (CHBS) at James Madison University (JMU) invites applicants for two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor and with a focus on Clinical Psychology, to begin August 2025. The new hires will join a lively pre-tenure cohort, as the department has been expanding and recently welcomed several new colleagues.
CHBS is working to advance inclusionary practices, processes, and policies that promote an anti-oppressive environment where every member can flourish in shared learning, teaching, scholarship, and service. Candidates could contribute to our ongoing initiatives relating to these practices through their teaching (e.g., teaching courses that contribute to sociocultural awareness objectives in our curriculum), their collaboration with active mentorship of historically underserved students (e.g., see our PUURPLE Scholars program, https://www.jmu.edu/chbs/psyc/puurple.shtml), their service (e.g., working with our student Inclusive Excellence Council), and/or other expertise that they bring to the department. The successful candidate will join a student-centered faculty with a strong commitment to open, respectful, and supportive collegiality.
The mission of the Department of Psychology is to educate our students in and contribute to the science of Psychology. The successful candidate will contribute to Abnormal Psychology and other courses in their areas of expertise, particularly our courses labelled as meeting a sociocultural awareness requirement within our BA/BS in Psychology.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Tenure-track faculty are expected to develop an active program of scholarship that involves undergraduate students in research. Supervision of independent reading and research projects and honors thesis projects are typical components of a teaching assignment. Occasional course instruction and supervision of graduate students enrolled in JMU’s M.A. in Psychological Sciences Program may be possible. Faculty serve as academic advisors to Psychology majors and contribute to service activities of the department, college, and university.
Psychology is among the most popular programs of study on campus, serving approximately 1,300 majors. JMU emphasizes instructional innovation in the classroom, evidence-based approaches to instructional improvement, and engaged learning experiences for undergraduates. Qualifications:
• Completed doctoral degree in Psychology or a closely related field by July 2025 is required; practitioner training commensurate with licensure is desired.
• Experience teaching Abnormal and/or Clinical Psychology is preferred.
• Evidence of high-quality undergraduate instruction is preferred.
• A documented history of peer-reviewed scholarship is preferred.
• History of effective mentoring and research supervision of students from a variety of backgrounds is preferred.
