General Information:

The Office of Residence Life at James Madison University is accepting applications for a Facilities Technician. The Office of Residence Life is committed to designing and maintaining a caring environment that encourages academic success, respect, personal growth, and responsibility to one’s community.

The Facilities Technician reports to the Assistant Director of Business Operations and supports the mission of the Office of Residence Life by providing management of residential facilities for the department. The successful candidate will ensure that the residential environment is safe, clean, well-maintained, and they will provide supervision and guidance to employees.

The Facilities Technician will be part of the Residence Life team that serves 6,700 residential students on a campus with 33 residential buildings that is continuing to grow. We are a close-knit department with 35 full-time staff members and over 250 student staff members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Facilities Technician will support the mission of Residence Life by ensuring the residential environment is safe, clean, well-maintained, and contributes to student education and development.

Leadership, Management and Supervision

  • Provides leadership for Residence Life by managing all residential facilities and assessing needs and conditions
  • Performs regular, detailed inspections of all residential facilities
  • Supervises a team of student staff during the academic year and full-time wage employees during the summer
  • Has the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish goals and objectives.
  • Knows, understands, and supports divisional values, and incorporates these values into daily interactions, decisions, and annual goals.

Resource Management

  • Maintains furniture inventory in all residence halls and in warehouse.
  • Serves as primary contact for vendors supplying resources to the residence halls

Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders

  • Works closely with external contractors to ensure complete and accurate work to meet departmental and student needs
  • Acts as a liaison with JMU Facilities Management

Serves on Committees

  • Represents Residence Life on various committees as needed

Student and Staff Engagement

  • Engages with residential students as needed, to stay attuned to their ever-changing facilities needs.
  • Directly supervises a team of student staff members

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Supervision and/or experience managing/leading a group
  • Problem solving/schedule organization
  • Experience with inventory management
  • Experience with inspections and accompanying documentation

Additional Considerations:

  • Forklift experience and operation of larger vehicles
