General Information:

The Office of Fixed Assets and Surplus Property at James Madison University is accepting applications for a part-time Computer Surplus Specialist. This is a part-time wage position with a flexible working schedule, working up to 29 hours per week. Work is conducted Monday-Friday between the hours of 7am and 5pm. The Computer Surplus Specialist is responsible for picking up surplus computer equipment from various locations on campus, updating departmental databases, and processing equipment for recycling or re-issue. The position provides superior customer service to university departments and external customers.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Computer Surplus Specialist will work with the Fixed Assets and Surplus Property team to ensure the proper accounting for the surplus and disposition of the University’s computer equipment.

The responsibilities of the Computer Surplus Specialist include but are not limited to:
Processing departmental surplus computer equipment forms in an Access database to create work orders and scheduling pickup of equipment from various locations on campus;
Verifying information on forms with items being picked up to ensure only approved items are surplused;
Using departmental van to pick up and transport surplus equipment to the warehouse for processing (from laptop, all-in-one and desktop computers to printers and servers);
Recording computer equipment receipts into a database for monthly reporting of surplused equipment to IT for updating their system;
Maintaining security of all equipment under the responsibility of Computer Surplus;
Processing equipment for recycling by entering information into spreadsheet manifest, palletizing equipment, shrink wrapping, and moving pallet to temporary storage area of warehouse;
Working with electronics recycler staff during scheduled appointment to ensure complete manifest of equipment is picked up;
Working with JMU IT to have newer technology computer equipment tested for possible re-issue to campus and recording equipment in departmental databases when re-issued to departments.
Completing departmental forms for transfers out of Computer Surplus;
Communicating regularly with Fixed Assets and Surplus Property staff and responding to email messages received through Computer Surplus departmental mailbox on daily basis;
Frequent customer interaction, both on the phone and in person;
Assisting with annual inventory of Computer Surplus equipment that is active in the fixed assets system; and
Assisting with Surplus Property special projects and sales as requested.

 

Qualifications:

Required qualifications include:
General knowledge of computer equipment and peripherals;
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Outlook and Word;
Ability to perform accurate and detailed work and apply policies and procedures;
Excellent customer service skills;
Excellent communication and organizational skills;
Ability to work independently;
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without an accommodation;
Ability to operate a pallet jack; and
Applicant must be at least 19 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.

Additional Considerations include:
Previous experience with data management systems; and
Detail oriented.

 

Conditions of Employment:  

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check.

This is a part-time wage position working up to an average of 29 hours per week over the course of a calendar year with no benefits.
