General Information:
The Facilities Management Department at James Madison University is seeking a Burner Shop Technician to inspect and repair hot water systems, steam and hydronic boiler systems, and warm air heating systems. Including auxiliary equipment such as pumps, valves, heat exchangers, water softeners, and fans.
Duties and Responsibilities:
•Inspects, cleans, and repairs boilers, hot water heaters, and related equipment to meet building requirements.
- Responds to emergencies and routine work orders in a timely manner.
- Trains other employees in proper equipment and system operation.
- Utilizes technical manuals as a reference for repairs, inspections and training.
•Installs, modifies, overhauls, repairs, and maintains boilers and associated auxiliary equipment.
- Properly installs and modifies systems and equipment according to specifications.
- Consistently adheres to repair manuals to meet critical requirement levels and expeditiously completes required repairs.
- Completes all work assignments in a timely manner.
- Accurately interprets blueprints, sketches, work orders, specifications and determines project requirements.
- Efficiently plans sequence of work by accurately determining work to be done and corrective measures to be taken.
- Accurately determines the proper tools and materials required for the job or projects.
- Prepares accurate, complete, and up to-date records of actions taken and assures documentation is properly signed and coordinated in a timely manner.
•Troubleshoots problem areas and inspects for defective equipment and faulty components.
- Effectively conducts periodic inspection and scheduled maintenance of systems and components to ensure proper operation.
- Effectively determines what adjustments are necessary and whether parts need to be substituted, replaced, repaired, or purchased.
- Accurately determines causes of defects and malfunctions on assigned equipment.
- Promptly determines repairs needed through appropriate testing and inspection.
- Effectively utilizes proper testing instruments and equipment.
- Perform combustion pre-tuning requirements as per MACT Regulations.
- Ensure combustion tuning is properly documented.
- Boilers and heating equipment are properly tuned to ensure optimum efficiency and decreased emissions.
•Tests system operation and detects component malfunctions.
•Performs annual tuning requirements as per DEQ/EPA regulations.
•Operates boilers and auxiliary equipment within designed parameters to ensure proper operation, safety, efficiency, and reliability.
- Uses operations manual as guide in the operation of all equipment.
- Observes equipment for proper operation and condition.
- Operates equipment safely and properly.
- Identifies discrepancies and takes corrective action for minor problems.
- Reports maintenance needs and deficiencies.
- Ensures all pertinent information is passed on to Supervisor as required.
•Utilizes safe practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations.
- Maintains a neat and clean work area.
- Consistently operates equipment in a safe manner, applying established safety procedures.
- Strictly adheres to safety procedures.
- Properly uses, maintains and accounts for tools required to accomplish duties.
- Maintains a neat personal appearance.
- Adheres to OSHA guidelines and standards.
- Identifies and corrects pre-existing safety issues.
Qualifications:
•Skilled and effective operation, maintenance, repair, inspection, and rebuilding of small packaged unit boilers and heating water systems.
•Competitive candidates should possess extensive knowledge of all aspects of repair and maintenance procedures to boilers, pumps, valves, controls, and 3-phase electric motors.
•Working knowledge of applicable safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
•Working skills to include: use of hand and power tools.
•Mechanical abilities to include: maintain and repair boilers and related equipment, troubleshoot and diagnose a variety of mechanical problems; ability to read and interpret gauges, recorders, and monitoring equipment; perform simple record-keeping tasks.
• The qualified candidate will be required to be on call for one week every four weeks and as needed in emergency situations.
