General Information:

The Associate Director of Work-Based Learning Experiences (WBLE) is the first position in a newly established Work-Based Learning unit in the University Career Center. The incumbent will oversee the coordination, tracking, assessment and reporting of curricular and non-curricular work-based learning experiences at James Madison University and, in alignment with University WBLE initiatives, to identify ways to maintain, strengthen and increase WBLE opportunities. The role is part of the leadership teams for the University Career Center and additionally operates under the advisement of the Presidential WBLE Committee.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Associate Director of Work-Based Learning is the first position in a newly established Work-Based Learning unit in the University Career Center. The incumbent will oversee the coordination, tracking, assessment and reporting of curricular and non-curricular work-based learning experiences at James Madison University and, in alignment with University WBLE initiatives, to identify ways to maintain, strengthen and increase WBLE opportunities. The role is part of the leadership teams for the University Career Center and additionally operates under the advisement of the Presidential WBLE Committee.

PLANNING, ASSESSMENT & REPORTING: In collaboration with the UCC and the Presidential WBLE Committee, oversee long-range strategic and annual planning activities related to ensuring every student at JMU has access to completing a WBLE during their academic careers, and ensure those plans are effectively communicated, pursued and monitored. Identify sources of annual WBLE completion information and oversee the compilation of this data. Report WBLE completion knowledge by college, major, class year, and other criteria. (20% of time)

WBLE CURRICULAR ALIGNMENT: Collaborate with Employer Services team, the Presidential WBLE Committee, faculty, and employer partners to respond to and create commitment among faculty and external WBLE partners to generate and maintain Curricular WBLE completion. Lead initiatives to develop partnership between employers, alumni, and faculty to inspire curricular WBLE connections. Maintain a clearinghouse of WBLE partners. Develop and update resources to guide and support faculty in creating and enhancing WBLE curricular offerings. Develop academic connections across JMU and a system to collect information about curricular alignment. Teach one or more sections of the UCC internship course. (30% of time)

NON CURRICULAL ALIGNMENT: Collaborate with the Presidential WBLE Advisory Committee, supervisors of student employees, other on-campus partners, and employers to ensure that on-campus and off-campus non-curricular WBLEs exist. Identify annual goals for the desired number of available non-curricular on campus and off campus WBLE opportunities. Create a process to evaluate on-campus and off-campus non-curricular experiences for WBLE designation. Identify incentives for student completion of non-credit WBLEs. Develop training for partners to create new or enhance non-curricular WBLE experiences. (30% of time)

WBLE COMMUNICATION: Collaborate with the Presidential WBLE Committee to identify communication and awareness campaigns and programming to support the JMU WBLE initiative. Oversee at least quarterly communication about on-campus WBLEs to students, faculty and employer partners. Oversee at least quarterly communication about curricular WBLEs to faculty and employer partners. Oversee coordination of Annual JMU WBLE Symposium. Establish and oversee completion of annual communication and programming initiatives. (10% of time)

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: Manage personnel, finance, technology and contractual resources and services to support the success of the unit. Make accurate and responsible budget requests, assure that fiscal operations are consistent with standards and polices, and carefully account for allocated funds, revenues, and external sources. (10% of time)

 

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Experience developing structure, systems and processes for successful department, division or university/organization wide adoption of one or more initiatives
  • Knowledge of work-based learning legalities, trends, and impact of successful work-based learning experience on students, the employer and the institution
  • Demonstrated experience developing mutually beneficial partnerships among different internal and external constituencies
  • Experience interacting with people at all levels of an organization
  • Experience supervising full-time staff
  • Ability to manage multiple and complex priorities
  • Understanding of higher education structure, student development and/or adult learning theories

Preferred:

  • Ability to motivate employer non-profit, government and corporate partners to engage students in WBLEs with their organization by explaining the relevance of academic programs, particularly liberal arts and sciences programs that lack a definitive career outcome in their discipline name
  • Experience working with career services technology such as Handshake, and 12Twenty including the ability to run reports and analyze results
  • Ability to use advanced functions of Excel to analyze student and employer engagement data and create performance metrics for the unit


 

Additional Posting Information:

This is a 1-year grant funded position from the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia with the possibility of securing an additional 2-years of funding for subsequent years.
