General Information:
James Madison University’s Department of Computer Information Systems and Business Analytics (CIS & BSAN) is seeking applicants for two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor with appointments beginning Fall 2026.
About the Department: The Department of CIS & BSAN is an academic unit of the College of Business and has 25 full-time faculty members, over 600 CIS majors in 3 concentrations (Information Systems, Business Analytics, and Information and Cybersecurity Management), 80 CIS minors, and over 50 BSAN minors and growing. In addition, the department supports the college by providing core business classes in information systems, quantitative methods, business statistics, and operations management. The department places a primary emphasis on its undergraduate programs that include hands-on projects, laboratory exercises, case analyses, and engaging classroom experiences designed to prepare graduates to work independently and in team-oriented environments. The CIS program is accredited by ABET making the department one of only 10 CIS programs in the nation accredited by both the AACSB and ABET.
In addition to high involvement in undergraduate education, departmental faculty members play a vital role in the delivery of the MBA programs. Outside the academic community, faculty members maintain strong connections with the consulting industry and interact regularly with members of the department’s advisory board.
About the College: The AACSB-accredited College of Business includes nationally ranked undergraduate and graduate programs. The college includes the Center for Entrepreneurship, Center for Professional Selling, Capital Markets Lab, and Madison Consulting. Our very successful alumni hold C-suite positions at major corporations. The college has approximately 5,300 students in its AACSB programs and is highly regarded across the JMU campus community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary teaching responsibility will be delivering undergraduate courses in business analytics, addressing topics related to business statistics, decision analysis, and management science, among others, and using computational tools such as Excel, Python, or R. The typical teaching load is 3/3. The successful candidate is expected to produce scholarly research leading to quality peer-reviewed journal publications and to engage substantively in academic and community service for the department, college, university, and the profession. The department fosters a collegial and collaborative team environment that supports student success and faculty development and growth.
Qualifications:
Minimum/Required Qualifications:
A doctorate in business analytics, decision sciences, management science, operations research, industrial engineering, or a closely related field such as data science, information systems, or operations/supply chain management is required by the date of appointment (a doctorate degree from a business program must be from an AACSB-accredited business school).
Candidates must demonstrate potential to perform scholarly work resulting in publications in quality peer-reviewed journals through a current research pipeline (e.g., working papers, journal submissions, conference presentations or proceedings, revisions at quality journals, etc.).
Candidates must demonstrate potential to teach courses in business analytics, covering areas such as prescriptive analytics (e.g., mathematical programming and simulation), business statistics, management science (e.g., decision analysis, queuing analysis), or other related areas. Candidates must also demonstrate potential to deliver the materials using Excel.
Preferred Qualifications:
A strong foundation in analytic software applications and Python for analytics or R is preferred. Special consideration will be given to candidates with teaching and/or professional experience in developing and applying analytics solutions in business contexts. Additional consideration will be given to candidates showing potential to teach in secondary areas such as AI in business contexts and operations/supply chain management.
