General Information:

James Madison University, a Division I Member of the NCAA and Sun Belt Conference, is seeking an Academic Advisor working with student athletes from assigned Olympic sports. This position is a full-time, 12 month position with a comprehensive benefits package.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic advising to assigned teams in compliance with university and NCAA guidelines and in partnership with university major advisors.
  • Ensure students are in the correct classes towards major and meeting percentage.
  • Monitor academic progress of assigned teams. Provide reports on the academic status of assigned teams to Head Coaches of assigned teams and the Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Success in regularly established meetings attended by the aforementioned individuals.
  • Make necessary and appropriate referrals to campus resources, provide timely and accurate reports on academic status of assigned teams to appropriate Head Coaches and Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Success Additionally, assisting with program reports on student-athletes sent to faculty members.
  • Assist at-risk student-athletes with academic recovery plans, coordinate travel letters for assigned teams for absences due to team travel.
  • Assist with recruitment of prospective student-athletes as needed with coaches and SAS staff.
  • Monitor NCAA progress toward the degree and continuing academic eligibility for all assigned student-athletes. Maintain current and accurate knowledge of all JMU degrees, majors, minors and pre-professional programs and how they affect continuing academic eligibility for student-athletes.
  • Maintain compliance with all relevant institutional, conference and NCAA rules and regulations. Maintain compliance with all applicable rules/laws relative to student privacy and FERPA.
  • Assist with summer orientation and study hall supervision.
  • Other duties as assigned by Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Success.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in academic advising of a comparable field of advising.
  • Proven experience working with diverse populations
  • Previous work experience in higher education
  • Knowledge of NCAA eligibility rules and progress towards degree completion requirements
  • Ability to work nights and weekends

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Previous experience working with at-risk individuals/student-athletes
  • Previous experience at Division 1 institutions
