Who We Are
Located in the heart of Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley, the city of Harrisonburg is approximately 120 miles from Washington, D.C. and Richmond, VA. With a population of just over 53,000, Harrisonburg is one of the most diverse communities in the Commonwealth of Virginia. JMU is a selective, public institution with a growing national reputation for offering experiences that lead to an outstanding education and inclusive environment for students, faculty and staff. The student body includes approximately 20,000 undergraduate and 1,900 graduate students, with over 1,000 full-time instructional faculty.

JMU offers thriving programs in the liberal arts, science and technology, and professional disciplines at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels. The university is committed to expanding diversity, fostering equity and inclusion, and supporting superlative teaching and scholarship. JMU has achieved national recognition for the high quality of its academic programs, focus on maintaining strong student/faculty interaction, and innovative faculty research.

General Information:

JMU invites applications for one tenure track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank in the Department of Social Work in the College of Health and Behavioral Studies (CHBS).

The Department of Social Work offers a Bachelor of Social Work degree which is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The Department is a thriving academic unit that offers multiple interprofessional educational (IPE) opportunities including two interdisciplinary minors: Nonprofit Studies and Family Studies (which has dual foci in family ecology and gerontology). The Department and College also collaborate with the Department of Justice Studies and College of Arts and Letters on a minor in Youth Justice and a new Innovation Center for Youth Justice.

The BSW program has a long history of excellence, leadership in social work education, and continuous national accreditation. We are a student-centered department that values open interactions between students and faculty. We are a diverse faculty with a strong commitment to respectful and supportive collegiality.

The Social Work Department is situated in JMU’s College of Health and Behavioral Studies (CHBS). We, along with other CHBS units, are undertaking efforts to identify and dismantle oppressive and discriminatory policies, practices, and processes while advancing inclusive excellence and promoting a CHBS culture in which every member can flourish. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment to building equitable and inclusive environments. Join us in achieving our goal of continuing to grow as a diverse college that embodies an atmosphere of belonging.

Duties and Responsibilities:
