General Information:
The Advising Assistant is a key member of the Global Ambassador program. Global Ambassadors are study abroad returnees and student leaders who support the work of the Study Abroad unit within the Center for Global Engagement. In this paid position, you’ll work in a supportive team environment, develop professional skills, advise prospective students on their application materials and how to have a transformative experience abroad.
The position is for a one-year academic term, beginning Fall 2025 and concluding at the end of the Spring 2026 semester.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Holds weekly office hours for peer advising sessions, both drop-in and scheduled.
Leads 30-45 minute informational sessions.
Helps monitor the Study Abroad inbox and answers commonly asked questions.
Assists with minor website updates and edits.
Helps coordinate advising events and other campus outreach activities.
Works in partnership with the Global Dukes Assistant to ensure tabling opportunities are fully staffed with student volunteers (Global Dukes).
Works Study Abroad events like the Study Abroad Fair, Family Weekend Brunch and Taste of Study Abroad, among others.
Trains Global Dukes on advising best practices.
Attends twice-monthly Global Ambassadors meetings, and once monthly Global Duke meetings.
Assists with special projects as assigned, under the direction of the Assistant Director of Advising and Student Support.
Maintains a professional appearance at all times including wearing a clean, logoed CGE shirt with professional bottoms. You will be issued one t-shirt and one sweatshirt as a uniform and are responsible for their cleaning and staying in good condition for the year.
Qualifications:
Availability to work 5 hours per week between 9am and 5pm, Monday – Friday.
Attend regular team meetings, trainings, and evening programming during the academic year.
Must have completed a study abroad program (JMU Semester, JMU Short-term, Study @, Exchange or External) prior to start date. Preference is given to students who have studied abroad on more than one program.
Students must be available to attend an in-person mandatory orientation from 8:30am to 3:30pm on August 18th and 19th, 2025, prior to the start of classes.

Students must have a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA.
