General Information:

The Center for Global Engagement (CGE) is seeking a Communications Intern to join the Study Abroad unit. As a key member of our communications team, you will play a vital role in enhancing our online presence and engaging our audience through various channels. This internship offers a supportive and flexible work environment where your creativity and skills will be nurtured and constructive feedback will guide your growth.



This position is for the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters. This internship is a paid student position that requires 10 hours of work per week. Office hours will be set according to the student’s availability and class schedule. The intern will support the communications work of the Study Abroad unit and will report directly to the Assistant Director of Marketing & Recruitment. Content produced for Study Abroad and the Center for Global Engagement can be used to build the student’s professional portfolio.



This employment opportunity may be compatible with the internship expectations of the JMU SMAD major. This internship can also count for elective credits towards the JMU graphic design major.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Draft social media posts and stories promoting Study Abroad events and opportunities to CGE social media

Suggest strategies for creating content according to the intended audience

Create branded graphics that raise awareness of events, programs, or organizational mission suitable for digital and print ads

Assist in creating and designing email campaigns to effectively reach our target audience.

Collaborate with the team to ensure the website is up-to-date with relevant and engaging content.

Create slide decks and presentations for Study Abroad events and programming

Create original graphics to be printed on branded apparel

Manage the process of ordering t-shirts, promotional items and other branded items. Communicate with distributors to obtain quotes, confirm designs, and place orders

Work Study Abroad events, when needed

Maintains a professional appearance at all times including wearing a clean, logoed CGE shirt with professional bottoms. You will be issued one t-shirt and one sweatshirt as a uniform and are responsible for their cleaning and staying in good condition for the year.

 

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

Must be a JMU undergraduate student enrolled in a major related to graphic design and/or communications, or demonstrated equivalent experience.

Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.) and Canva.

Experience using Cascade is a plus.

Availability work 10 hours per week, usually during business hours, but occasionally on evenings or Saturdays for special events.

Participation in a JMU Study Abroad program is a plus.

At least one sample should showcase your skills in graphic design and at least one sample should showcase your written communication skills. Conditions of Employment:  

Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).

Students must have a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA.
