General Information:

James Madison University is seeking applicants for the position of Lecturer of Voice within the School of Music, working with both undergraduate and graduate students. This lecturer position is a renewable term appointment and is eligible for promotion opportunities. Our new colleague will teach voice and have a holistic view of collegiate voice instruction which values strong foundational skills and versatility. We seek a passionate teacher eager to collaborate with faculty and students to build an environment that is just, equitable, and responsive to the needs of the next generation of musicians and artists.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, teaching voice lessons, vocal pedagogy, diction, song literature, directing graduate and undergraduate scholarship in the voice area, and possibly teaching classes aligning with the candidate’s area of interest and expertise. We are particularly interested in candidates who will contribute to a forward-facing curriculum that graduates versatile singers prepared to work and teach in today’s ever evolving landscape. The successful candidate will be responsible for recruiting and retaining students, and actively contribute to faculty governance.

 

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
• Completed doctoral degree in Vocal Performance and/or Vocal Pedagogy.
• Demonstrated previous professional experience with collegiate-level voice teaching.
• Evidence of experience and success programming diverse and expansive repertoire.
• Ability to recruit and retain voice students.
• Ability to articulate and practice current trends in music.
• Ability to lead graduate level research and writing.
• An entrepreneurial mindset to cultivate a dynamic collegiate voice program.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Evidence of at least 5 years of collegiate-level teaching.
• Experience with classroom teaching at the collegiate level.
• Bring an area of expertise not currently represented within the JMU School of Music.
• Evidence of successful student recruitment.
• Ability to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate level courses.
• Evidence of professional performance activities.
• Evidence of scholarly and/or creative activities.
