General Information:

The Department of Economics at James Madison University invites applications for multiple positions of Lecturer beginning Fall 2025. These are nontenure-track, full-time, benefits-eligible, renewable academic year positions. Teaching load is 4/4.

About the Department: Economics at James Madison University is a strong and successful department with 19 full-time faculty. JMU economics graduates have distinguished themselves in a variety of careers. In addition to its major programs, the economics department supports the College of Business and programs across campus with top-quality instruction.

About the College: The Department of Economics resides in the College of Business. The AACSB-accredited College of Business includes nationally ranked undergraduate and graduate programs. The College includes the Center for Entrepreneurship, Center for Professional Selling, Capital Markets Lab, Madison Consulting, and other programs focused on outreach and engagement with the business community. Our very successful alumni hold C-suite positions at major corporations including SAP, Fidelity, Bank of America, IBM, McKinsey & Company, Deloitte, KPMG, and other Fortune 500 companies and readily engage with the College. The faculty are teacher-scholars who are collaborative and supportive colleagues. The College has approximately 4,100 students in its AACSB programs and is highly regarded across the JMU campus community.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

These positions have teaching responsibilities in the area of Economics. The primary courses taught would be Introduction to Macroeconomics (ECON 200) and/or Introduction to Microeconomics (ECON 201). Secondary teaching may include electives or upper division courses within the Economics curriculum.

In addition to teaching responsibilities and office hours, the successful candidate will be expected to perform service activities such as working on departmental committees, advising student organizations, and attending university meetings, as well as maintaining professional qualifications according to AACSB standards.

The following is a non-exhaustive list of possible activities faculty members may undertake to support the maintenance of professional qualifications: continuing education and certifications, consulting, serving on boards, recognized professional expertise in the teaching discipline, publications, and university administrative duties. These requirements can be met in several ways, thereby providing the candidate with the ability to contribute based upon their strengths, abilities, and interests. It is anticipated that in order to meet these obligations, the successful candidate will need to be available for potential on-campus activities on multiple days throughout the week.

 

Qualifications:

Candidates are required to have at least a master’s degree in economics. Proficiency in teaching principles of microeconomics and/or principles of macroeconomics is required. Applicants must have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and a productive agenda necessary to maintain AACSB status. Demonstrated evidence of teaching effectiveness and excellent communication skills are required. The candidate should be committed to diversity, equality and inclusion as these are some of the core values of the university.
