General Information:

We invite applications for a faculty position in our Bachelor’s Degree Program in Intelligence Analysis beginning in August 2027. The successful candidate will be appointed either at the rank of tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor, or at the rank of RTA Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice, depending on qualifications and experience.

In its 20th year, the Intelligence Analysis Program continues to be an in-demand, multidisciplinary undergraduate degree preparing students to become analysts, with a specialization in intelligence analysis. Our vision is a versatile education that simultaneously teaches students to synthesize both critical and creative thinking with data analytics for collection, interpretation, and visualization in the production and communication of analysis, frequently within a security context. Our program serves around 250 students, with important national and international partnerships to provide opportunities for students to apply their education directly to real-world security challenges. Our community is composed of teacher-scholars, and so a hallmark of our program is the meaningful involvement of undergraduate students in applied and scholarly work.

The Intelligence Analysis Program resides within the broader School of Integrated Sciences (SIS), and the College of Integrated Science and Engineering. SIS supports innovative and dynamic academic careers for over 50 faculty rooted in three undergraduate programs: Geography, Integrated Science and Technology, and Intelligence Analysis, along with potential for renewed graduate programs. SIS is a vibrant, welcoming, and supportive culture that embraces innovation, collaboration, humility, and student engagement. We seek to balance and integrate both teaching and research, as well as specialized disciplines and distinctive degree programs, within an open and supportive culture. For more information about our School and its programs, please visit: https://www.jmu.edu/cise/sis/

Duties and Responsibilities:

Our ideal future colleague would be an engaged teacher, in-depth scholar, and active contributor to the professional communities that support analysis. A typical teaching load is three in-person courses per semester. Our future colleague would begin by teaching our existing courses but also have the opportunity to assist in curricular development that further advances the teaching of analysis. We welcome applicants from any academic discipline (to include the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences) and/or any professional analytical background in the public or private sectors that enables them to speak with credibility about the process of doing analysis and qualifies them to teach in (ideally) multiple areas of our curriculum, and to advance scholarship on analysis and in the disciplines that support it. We also value other internal and external professional service that improves the disciplines and communities that promote good analysis.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in a relevant academic field is required for a Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor appointment. A minimum of a master’s degree in combination with substantial, demonstrated experience as an analyst is required for an RTA Assistant or Associate Professor of Practice appointment.

Candidates should have sufficient education and/or experience to demonstrate the ability to teach specific courses in (ideally) two or more of the following areas of the IA Program: critical thinking and reasoning methodologies, data analytics, the social context and lived experience of analysts, and the development and delivery of analytic products.

We are particularly interested in applicants who demonstrate commitment to:
• Excellence in teaching undergraduates, as well as thoughtfulness about improving approaches to undergraduate education for analysis.
• Professional mentoring of students seeking to become future analysts.
• Significant potential as a scholar with a strategic and intentional research agenda.
• Research focusing on the study and practice of analysis, to include, but not limited to, Intelligence Analysis.
• Collaboration to support and expand the scope and reach of the IA Program, and corresponding opportunities for its students and faculty.

Additional Posting Information:

Required Documentation:
1. Cover Letter that explains specifically how the candidate’s expertise and experience fit our particular Programmatic aspirations, values, and areas of teaching.
2. Curriculum Vitae.
3. Teaching Statement (of no more than 2 pages) that explains the candidate's approach to the theory and practice of teaching undergraduates.
4. Research Overview (of no more than 2 pages, uploaded under "other document #1") that explains the candidate's development as a scholar and how their work would help advance the future of analysis at JMU and beyond.
