General Information:

University Recreation (UREC) is currently seeking applicants for the Coordinator of Sport Clubs. UREC is a Health & Well-being department within the Student Affairs division. The mission of UREC is to promote and advance healthy lifestyles through educational programs, participation opportunities and supportive services. The UREC Coordinator of Sport Clubs serves as one of two Sport Club professional staff members leading a comprehensive and dynamic Sport Club program that provides participation, leadership, and competition opportunities for over 2,000 JMU students each year. This Coordinator works autonomously to provide experienced leadership, advising, risk management, and event coordination for student leaders to give them the tools to build healthy, inclusive, competitive teams that represent JMU regionally and nationally.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

SPORT CLUB PROGRAM LEADERSHIP: Provides direct leadership, risk management and advising to approximately 25 Sport Club teams’ student executive members. This includes providing guidance, approvals, and coordination of team activities including tryouts, practices, home competitions/performances. Provides mentorship for student leaders in creating club goals related to recruitment, retention, philanthropy, teambuilding, and performance. Schedules and oversees the practice and game schedule for these clubs within the JMU event management software. Track participation data and conduct needs assessments on a regular basis to inform changes to maximize involvement opportunities for JMU students.

FACILITIES/RISK MANAGEMENT: Accountable for the management/mitigation of risks inherent in each sport, based on best practices for each activity. Takes initiative to collaborate with facilities staff to ensure a safe, attractive and clean environment in all spaces utilized for sport club activities both on and off campus. Establishes a shared supervision/support schedule between members of the sport club team for all home weekend competitions. Provides sport expertise to collaborate with the Assistant Director for Sport Clubs and Associate Director of Facilities to establish, maintain, adjust, and enforce risk management protocols for all programs and facilities. Serves as an active member of the UREC Professional Staff Facility and Program Supervision Team (rotating evenings).

SPORT CLUB OFFICER CURRICULUM: Designs, implements, and evaluates an extensive Sport Club Officer Training curriculum for all JMU Sport Club executive members (approximately 50 clubs, 200 executive members). The curriculum includes Sport Club compliance with James Madison University and University Recreation guidelines as they pertain to day-to-day operations, risk management, hazing and off campus travel. Coordinates professional development opportunities for Sport Club officers each semester. Tracks participation data and conduct needs assessments on a regular basis to inform changes.

STUDENT STAFF SUPERVISION: Strategically hires, trains, actively mentors, and evaluates 10-12 Sport Club student staff in compliance with all applicable University guidelines. Provides impactful mentorship and learning opportunities for the Graduate Assistant for Sport Clubs. Determines schedule for student staff in coordination with practices and competitions. Approves Sport Club student staff payroll and manage student employee budgets. Supports the training and performance of Camp Counselors during the Summer semester when Sport Clubs are not operating.

ASSESSMENT, ADMINISTRATION, & COLLABORATION: Establishes and assesses learning outcomes for Sport Club participants/employees annually, and conducts at least one assessment each year, utilizing data-driven insights to inform curriculum/program changes. Provides updates to ensure the accuracy and currency of Sport Club information on the website and related documents, leveraging technology to enhance program effectiveness. Maintains accurate records. Recommends purchases for Sport Club equipment and supplies. Collaborates with colleagues in UREC, Student Affairs, and other divisions as appropriate, and is an active member on committees, commissions and task forces as assigned. Engages in staff meetings and departmental events to support teammates and the department/university mission. Maintains personnel files and manages student employee payroll to within 5% of approved budget. Effectively utilize conferences and other professional development opportunities as tools for staying current in the field and broadening knowledge, skills and abilities in the role.

 

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Relevant sport/recreation management experience
  • Experience managing/mitigating risk in a sport and/or recreation setting
  • Experience facilitating group training and/or leadership development programs
  • Experience supervising, leading and mentoring college students

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience creating sport club officer training and leadership development programs
  • Experience with oversight of sport club events and managing game day experiences
  • Highly organized, efficient and effectively utilizes multiple technology platforms including survey software
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with experience communicating with a wide range of internal and external partners, including parents
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Commitment to collaboration and inclusion
