General Information:
The Center for Global Engagement (CGE) is seeking an Assistant Director of Advising and Student Services. This position will report to the Associate Director of Study Abroad Programs, and directly supervise a growing team of study abroad advisors and student staff. The Assistant Director of Advising and Student Services, in supervision of other advising team members, will be responsible for supporting students in every phase of the study abroad process including pre-application advising, pre-departure support, on-program guidance when needed, and re-entry programming. This position will also provide leadership and direction of the scholarship process. This position will also be required to serve as a program director and an instructor on study abroad programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Alongside the study abroad leadership team, create study abroad advising strategy and provide direction for a growing team of study abroad advisors and student staff.
- Oversee an advising portfolio of JMU study abroad programs and provide information to prospective study abroad students and their families about types of programs, program details, courses on offer, application assistance, scholarship opportunities, and other vital information via one-on-one advising conversations, the Study Abroad inbox, event support, and management of Study Abroad webpages.
- Provide direction on all aspects of student pre-departure processes including pre-departure orientations, scholarships selections, visa and passport processing, course enrollment, insurance enrollment, safety and risk management, family questions and concerns, and student withdrawals.
- Develop strategy for supporting students upon return to JMU to ensure the continuation of learning post-program by creating and maintaining a study abroad re-entry program, which may include the development, oversight, and instruction of an on-campus course.
- Collaborate with the program director of JMU’s Study at Oxford, Cambridge, and St. Andrews programs, and serve as primary program director for JMU’s exchange programs.
- Manage not-for-credit and external programs by liaising with internal and external partners, maintaining consortium agreements, and overseeing the transfer credit process where applicable.
- Serve as a program director and course instructor for study abroad programs, which includes being responsible for creating course syllabi and curriculum, working with academic unit heads, instructing a course, traveling abroad, and grading student assignments.
Qualifications:
Required:
-Master’s degree
-Demonstrated previous professional experience with student advising, preferably in an international education context
-Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to interact effectively and professionally with students and campus partners
-Excellent time management and organizational skills with willingness and demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, including long and short-term projects
Preferred:
-Experience with instructing college-level courses
-Experience supervising team members and aiding in their professional growth and development
-Intercultural communication skills and ability to work with non-English speaking individuals
-Previous experience living, working, or studying abroad
-Prior experience in an international office
-Demonstrated knowledge of Terra Dotta
