Middle, Secondary, and Math Education
The Department of Middle, secondary, and Math Education (MSME) offers graduate and undergraduate programs in middle and secondary education that are approved by the Virginia Department of Education and accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
All programs have an extensive fieldwork component that assures students have varied opportunities for experiences working with children and families. Programs and faculty are housed in Memorial Hall.
MSME is home to 15 full-time faculty members and 1 staff member.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The MSME department is seeking a full-time tenure track Assistant professor to begin employment in August 2025.
The successful candidate should: demonstrate a collaborative approach to teaching, scholarship, and service that involves working with colleagues both within and beyond the academic unit; articulate an ambitious future-oriented vision for the department that includes attracting diverse new faculty and students to the programs; teach in-person, online, and hybrid classes in multiple programs; mentor students in these programs; serve as a member of students’ Honors and Capstone committees; collaborate in research in the field; and build capacity and partnerships with school districts and community agencies in Virginia, as well as across the country.
Qualifications:
• Candidates should hold an appropriate terminal degree in Mathematics Education.
• Candidates must have demonstrated previous experience as a middle grades education and/or secondary math education instructor in higher education;
• An established research/scholarship agenda that includes the application of video games or artificial intelligence to math education;
• Demonstrated experience developing curriculum and/or assessment;
• Demonstrated understanding and/or research in culturally responsive pedagogy/leadership, and inclusive excellence;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
